A person will receive an email reminder if:

There is an event with "Send email reminders" set to say "1 day before" (anything except "No")
The person is rostered onto the event
The person has an email address specified in their profile
The person has the setting "Email reminders" set to Yes in their profile

The reminder email looks like this:

To: Jack Fielder
Subject: Reminder from teamyell for Jack Fielder re an event on 19 Apr 08 @ 11:35am
